<p>So many people start a fitness program in the new year, but within a few months they have forgotten all about it. with work and family commitments life just seems too busy to find time for exercise.</p>
<p>Most of us put off thinking about our health until some kind of serious illness hits us. But if we had begun to pay attention to our health earlier it might have been possible to avoid the illness.</p>
<p>Lifelong fitness is about enjoying a healthy and happy old<span id="more-409"></span> age. We want to enjoy being active and socially engaged throughout our lives.</p>
<p>Most of us are living longer. But that longer life is often made miserable by chronic diseases. All diseases have some genetic component but nonetheless most of the diseases of old age can be reduced by regular exercise and a healthy diet. </p>
<p>Obesity, high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes all take their toll on older people. Lack of exercise and poor diet are usually a contributory factor.</p>
<p>Arthritis, a common disease in older people, can be helped by exercise. It helps to keep the joints mobile.</p>
<p>Osteoporosis affects many older women. It makes the bones brittle as they lose calcium. Exercise can be help to prevent it or improve the condition.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that even the onset of Alzheimers disease and other forms of senile dementia can be delayed by taking exercise. It is never too late to start. Even the oldest seniors can benefit from gentle exercise.</p>
<p>Taking exercise does not necessarily mean going to the gym or buying special equipment. Walking daily for half an hour is the simplest form of exercise. It costs nothing and is an effective way to lifetime fitness.</p>
<p>Park the car a little further away than usual or get off the bus a stop earlier and walk the rest of the way. Try taking a walk in your lunch break.</p>
